Claustrofobia European Tour Kicks Off

With their 'Visceral' European Tour commencing tonight in Hamburg, vocalist and guitarist of Brazilian thrash metal outfit Claustrofobia, Marcus D’Angelo takes time from the bustle to tell Europe what to expect as the band hits its shores. He also speaks on the journey his band has taken over the past twenty years, as well as commenting on the beginnings of the ‘wild metal from’ his homeland.

“The metal scene in Brazil in the 80’s and early 90’s had little information about anything”, comments Marcus. “To get a vinyl or tape from bands outside Brazil was almost impossible. It was through trading tapes and vinyls that headbangers got [to hear] Metallica, Slayer, Kreator, Venom etc. These bands then shaped the metal here in Brazil. “

With bands such as Sepultura and Krisiun hitting the international stage and making household names in the world of metal Marcus tries to explain what fuels the fire of Brazilian metal and what it is that often makes the music so passionate and recognisable.

“I guess each part of the world has their own style in the metal scene because of the different cultures and ways of life. Here in Brazil it is wild and that's why people used to call us ‘Metal Malóka’. Also, in comparison to the likes of Europe, Brazil is a relatively ‘’new” country, therefore we must find our own way to play each riff and compose. It is [fired] with hot blood and this reflects in the music. Sepultura is the best example and they showed the world the wild metal from Brazil.”

“Bands to look out for include, Ratos de Porão, Korzus, Sarcófago, Dorsal Atlantica, Torture Squad, Vulcano, Lacerated and Carbonized, Unearthly, Confronto, Andralls, Violator, Nervosa, Test, Surra, Project46, Eminence… and of course Claustrofobia!”

The journey hasn’t always been plain sailing for Claustrofobia who are currently celebrating their twentieth anniversary with the release of an independently made DVD, Visceral 20 Years.

“It was not easy, [there were] high and low times. In Brazil it is harder than in some other places due the fact [we don’t play] the traditional music that people there are used to and listen to. Even though this has changed in [recent] years it is still not in our culture.

“We want to make music for every heavy fan. Metal is an instinct that you have inside and we want to let it out, keeping it heavy, strong, wild and alive. We want to encourage people to support metal because it is a true music style. In the end we just want to be Claustrofobia and try to represent our culture truly without borders and be a reference to other bands. This is what it is all about.” Comments Marcus finishing up.

“At the end of the day Claustrofobia is devotion to metal, heavy, fast and brutal; a hybrid of love and hate. “

Look out Europe!
