After years of anticipation, RAUNCHY are finally back. The Danish genre-benders release their seventh studio album, “Prisoner”, today via Mighty Music, marking the long-awaited return of one of Denmark’s most distinctive modern metal acts.

Twelve years have passed since Raunchy’s last studio album, but “Prisoner” makes one thing immediately clear: the band did not spend that time standing still.
Rather than attempting to recreate the sound of their previous releases, Raunchy have used the years away to create an album that feels unmistakably theirs while pushing their trademark collision of metal, electronics, melody and atmosphere into new territory.
From the crushing industrial weight of the heavier tracks to the soaring choruses and cinematic synth landscapes, “Prisoner” is an album built around contrasts. Brutality and melody. Darkness and colour. Modern production and old-school songwriting instincts. Aggression and vulnerability.
It is precisely that tension that has always made Raunchy difficult to put into a box.
The band emerged from Denmark’s metal scene in the early 2000s with a sound that refused to respect genre boundaries, combining elements of melodic death metal, metalcore, industrial metal and electronic music long before such combinations became commonplace. More than two decades later, that same refusal to follow a formula remains at the heart of “Prisoner”.
The album also sees Raunchy reconnect with producer Jacob Hansen, whose relationship with the band stretches back to their early years and their acclaimed album “Velvet Noise”. His understanding of the band’s particular balance between heaviness, melody and electronic textures once again proves crucial, giving “Prisoner” a massive and detailed sound without sacrificing the character that has always set Raunchy apart.
The first taste of the album arrived with “Designed Despair”, a track that immediately demonstrated that Raunchy were returning with their ambition intact. Huge melodies collide with industrial heaviness, while the interplay between vocalists Mike Semesky and Jeppe Christensen adds another dimension to the band’s already distinctive sound.
But “Prisoner” is not simply an album about returning.
It is an album about being stuck, breaking free and refusing to remain the person you were.
The title reflects the darker and more personal themes running through the record: being trapped in your own thoughts, habits, memories and expectations, while still searching for a way forward. Yet despite those themes, “Prisoner” is ultimately far from a defeatist record. It is energetic. Defiant. At times euphoric. And above all, it sounds like a band that had something left to say.
After a twelve-year wait, there is no grand explanation needed. No attempt to justify the absence. No nostalgia trip. Raunchy are back. And with “Prisoner”, they have delivered an album that sounds like a band answering only to themselves.
